If you’ve ever had to interrogate a waitress, scrutinise a restaurant menu or forego something entirely “just in case” it may have gluten in it, then this is the news you’ve been waiting for.
An American-based company, called 6SensorLabs, has manufactured a nifty little device that can detect whether or not there is gluten present in your food.
It’s the kind of gadget that has the potential to make the lives of gluten-intolerant and coeliac sufferers a heck of a lot easier; the pocket-sized Nima takes a small sample of your food and runs a quick analysis of its contents.
Within minutes, users will know (via either a smiley face or a frowny face) whether or the food is OK to eat or is positive for the gluten protein.
Scott Sundvor, co-founder of 6SensorLabs, explained that their new product could put a lot of consumers’ minds at ease.
“A lot of people who have food issues get very stressed when they’re eating out, and they avoid eating out altogether,” he told Live Science.
“Our product will really enable them to start going out again and start being more open in social settings.”
The device goes on sale later in the year, but is available to pre-order from the website; for $199 US, customers can get their hands on the unit and three capsules, with refill packs available for $47.95 US.
