The latest social media platform to gain popularity around the globe, BeReal has been downloaded 28 million times and is dubbed the ‘anti-Instagram’ for its emphasis on unfiltered images.
With unrealistic and heavily edited content on social media contributing to low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression, BeReal is a refreshing take on what it means to be social online.
It works by providing a randomly timed, daily notification to post a photo in-app. You only have two minutes, and BeReal captures both the selfie and rear camera view, so you’ve got to ‘be real’. If you’re unsatisfied with the output, you can retake the image, but that’s not what BeReal is about — your followers can tap into the picture to see your number of retakes.
Although you can post late, your followers will be able to tell — BeReal encourages authentic posting in the moment rather than waiting for the heavily curated ‘highlight reel’ of your day.
In July 2022, the app landed the number one spot in the United States Apple App Store charts, dethroning the ever-popular TikTok. And it’s not just your mates joining the app; island nation Fiji is the first country in the world to join BeReal, on a mission to share the ‘real’ Fiji through its kind-hearted locals and paradise-like views.
