With a new season comes a new approach to your beauty routine – and that includes your day-to-day makeup look.

While summer is the time to embrace a dewy and bronzed no makeup-makeup look, when we see the days start to get shorter and the temperature starting to drop, we start to think a bit differently about our beauty routine – we’ll be upping our moisturiser, giving a bit more coverage to our skin, and experimenting with new colours. Yes, autumn is here and as makeup buffs here at Miss FQ, we delight in the chance to try some of the new season products and trends to achieve a new beauty look for the season – whether you’re meeting up with friends IRL or online!

To get us started, we teamed up with one of the leading makeup artists in the country, New Zealand Makeup Director for Maybelline New York Gee Pikinga, to pull together a look that will take you right through autumn and into winter: a glam, smokey eye in earthy tones that will makes the eyes pop and the skin look flawless.

Watch our video above to see how Gee created this look, and follow our step-by-step instructions below.

Step 1: Prime face with primer – Gee used Maybelline New York’s Master Primer Anti-Redness – to counteract any red tones in the skin. A good primer will not only nourish and hydrate the skin, but will also ensure the longevity of your makeup.

Step 2: Apply your foundation and blend in well, concentrating extra coverage on areas that need a bit more. It’s important to find the perfect foundation shade that matches your face and your neck so you have a nice continual flow.

Step 3: After applying foundation, go back with your concealer to hide any imperfections or flaws that you want to conceal, and brighten any dark areas. Gee used a concealer brush to apply Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Concealer under the eyes, on the eyelids and to the T-zone, to give the appearance of beautiful, bright skin.

Step 4: Set your base in place using a setting powder, like the Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder, to ensure your base lasts well into the day.

Step 5: Now that the base is perfected, contour the face to bring definition and shape back to the face. Gee applied Maybelline City Bronzer in Light Cool, starting at the top of the ear and  taking the shade down the cheekbone. Gee recommends lifting the brush when it gets to the corner of the eye to create a nice “vanishing point”, rather than a harsh line. Use light sweeping motions across the forehead, around the jawline and down the sides of the nose.

Step 6: A touch of blush will bring some life back into the complexion.

Step 7: Next up, highlighter. Gee used Maybelline New York Master Chrome Highlighter to give the skin a pearlescent finish. Brush it lightly across anywhere the light would naturally hit – the top of the cheekbones, the cupid’s bow, tip of the nose and top of the forehead.

Step 8: Apply a base eyeshadow such as Maybelline New York Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR across the entire lid, blending a small amount out towards the brow, before using darker shades to create definition across the lid and into the eye socket. Maybelline New York’s Burgundy Bar Eyeshadow Palette has many of the trending eyeshadow colours you’ll need this autumn, from light metallics, through to earthy browns and punchy purples and burgundys. Gee applied darker shades in the eye socket and outer corner of the eye, and used iridescent shades in the inner corner and centre of the eyelid to reflect the light.

Step 9: For a hint of drama, define the eye with a cat eye flick. Making the process simple is Maybelline New York’s Hyper Easy Liner (it’s as easy as the name suggests!) – the brush tip gives you an extremely crisp, black line.

Step 10: What will really pull this look together is a good mascara, and Maybelline New York’s new Falsies Lash Lift Mascara is set to be a cult classic. Apply to upper lashes (lower lashes too if that’s a look you like) for an instant “lash lift” effect. As Gee says, you’ll achieve a salon lash lift “without the cost, the time, or the damage”.

Step 11: Last up: the lips. For long-lasting power, Gee used a Maybelline New York Superstay Ink Crayon which is super easy to apply and really goes the distance. For a secret tip of the trade, fill in the entire lip area with the crayon and then afterwards, line the lips for a well-defined pout.

That’s it! Be sure to experiment with different shades and colour combinations – autumn is a great time to try out those colours you might not have tried otherwise. We’d love to see your creations too – share with us by tagging @missfqnz and #maybellinenz and we’ll repost some of our favourites.
