New season lipstick trends tested

lipstick index

Check out the key lipstick colours and finishes for the season. We’ve tried them all on so you know exactly what they’ll look like!

We spoke to Maybelline New York NZ make-up artist Julia O’Neil about the emerging colour trends for this coming autumn/winter and how to get the look right.

Rich deep berry tones that create a ‘just bitten’ lip look are in; rich tones of plum, purple and lilac also feature strongly.

Get the look by taking a deep berry tone and just dabbing it onto the centre of the lips either directly from the bullet or using your fingertips. Blend the colour outwards and press your lips together to get a perfect stain of colour. The look is more about a velvety matte stain rather than a creamy or glossy texture.

Go purple! From lilacs through to rich deep plums there will be a shade that suits you. Try working two fine layers of lipstick on to your lips using a lip brush, blotting in between each layer and skipping the gloss.

Layered, velvety red matte lips are always a classic look and will also feature strongly this season. Aim for a lipstick that is not too creamy and not too dry, as the velvet texture is the key to keeping the lip colour fresh.
