Me Before You

10 style cues we can take from Lou in ‘Me Before You’

Her bold style is total inspo #yeahgurl!

Sam Claflin, Emilia Clarke and a love story to rival The Notebook? Um. We’re so making a trip to the cinema on June 16th.

If, like us, your anticipation for the upcoming film adaptation of Me Before You is reaching feverish heights, then we’re sorry to tell you, the emotional rollercoaster has just begun! Trust us, try and get through even just the trailer without completely tearing up.

It’s not all sad times though. In the film, Clarke plays Lou – a bubbly and slightly off-the-wall young woman who is content with who she is and where she’s at, with no desire for adventure. Until she meets Will, who opens her eyes to a world of possibilities.

While her eccentric style may be bolder and more risk-taking than your average, the fact that she remains true to herself and isn’t afraid to stand out from the crowd is inspo right there #yeahgurl! #liveboldly!

Here’s 10 of our favourite looks from the film:

DenimOveralls

1. Denim overalls
Alexa Chung once said her favourite thing to wear on a first date was a pair of dungarees. In her words: “If he likes me in dungarees, I know we’re going to be fine.” We are still pretty obsessed with these Rolla’s Eastcoast Flare overalls, with its universally flattering fitted silhouette.

YellowRaincoat

2. A brightly-coloured raincoat
Maybe it’s the association to rainy London days or winter jaunts in the countryside, but there’s something so quintessentially English about a yellow ‘Mac’ (that’s a raincoat to us!) Our pick? This totes ray-of-sunshine Petit Bateau raincoat.

PussybowBlouse

3. Pussybow blouse
While the standout piece here is the houndstooth jacket, what Lou has actually picked up on is that the pussybow blouse is very much having a ‘moment’ once again. Witchery has white and black silk versions this season. We like.

PrintedShirt

4. Printed shirt
Lou is onto something here with this quirky printed shirt. While we may not be able to get our hands on this gorge Equipment star print shirt right this very minute, these shirts from Witchery, Country Road and ASOS (did someone say flamingo print?) will fit the bill nicely in the meantime.

WinterWoollies

5. Winter woollies
Granny always told you to rug up from the cold to avoid ‘catching a chill’. Granny is always right. And thus your number 1 winter must-have is some winter woollies. Karen Walker has just released her new beanie/knitted turban and matching scarf so you can bundle up all nice ‘n snug.

NeckScarf

6. Neck scarf
Obviously Lou got the memo about a neck scarf being the accessory du jour right now. Her take on the trend is girly and pretty, worn with pastels and lace. Hot tip: Second-hand stores are a great place to pick up a unique vintage scarf that NOBODY ELSE WILL HAVE. YEAH!

FauxFur

7. Faux fur
We don’t have to tell you that faux fur is where it’s at, and like Lou, you’ll want to throw on your faux fur jacket when you’re headed outdoors for some alfresco socialising this winter. We can’t look past this navy and black Mia mixed faux fur coat from Forever New, but Unreal Fur do some great snuggly options too.

StripedTights

8. Striped tights
Lou’s print-clashing style is definitely eye-catching. Recreate the look with these Pretty Polly for House of Holland Legwear zig zag print stockings.

RetroSundress

9. Retro dress
A retro sundress may not necessarily be a wardrobe ‘staple’ but when it comes to cost-per-wear value, you’re going to get your money’s worth. Say hello to your new saviour: This COOP by Trelise Cooper Saigon Summer dress aka the ultimate find. (P.S. This ASOS Fit & Flare tea dress is a total steal!)

LittleRedDress

10. Little Red Dress
And of course, where would we be without a LRD? Will’s reaction to Lou’s dress in the trailer (Jaw. Floor.) has us convinced that date night just won’t be the same without it! ASOS is again looking after you girl, with this Club L fishtail maxi dress that will no doubt incite an equally pleasing reaction.

* Me Before You is in New Zealand cinemas June 16.
